Acsme 2026 Keynote Matthews Head Shot 2

Professor Kelly Matthews, Professor of Higher Education, University of Queensland, Australia

Professor Kelly Matthews is an internationally recognised higher education scholar focused on curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy, with a track record of translating research into practice to improve student learning. She is known for advancing students as partners in teaching and learning, shaping scholarship and practice globally, including work on student voice and artificial intelligence in education.

She is a Principal Fellow of Advance HE (PFHEA), an Australian Learning and Teaching Fellow, and has received multiple teaching awards. She has also held international leadership roles, including serving as Vice President of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSoTL), and is the founding co-editor of the International Journal for Students as Partners (IJSaP).

Her career began in science education, where she worked with colleagues in mathematics and biology on quantitative skills development. This work was supported by a national teaching grant and grew from connections first made at the ACSME conference. Her doctoral research examined how science students experience mathematics across the curriculum, contributing to the Science Student Skills Inventory (SSSI), which enabled student perspectives on whole-of-program science learning outcomes to guide curriculum development.

She is Professor of Higher Education at The University of Queensland and a parent of two children with a mathematician. Connect with Kelly on LinkedIn.
