The ACDS has just released a position paper on the importance and value of practical work in a university undergraduate science degree. The ACDS paper outlines the unique features of laboratory and field work and argues that practical work is an essential curriculum component because of its unique value in fostering holistic learning. The paper highlights the value of laboratory and field work in the science curriculum because these activities allow students to engage with science and the ways in which scientific knowledge is generated in a different mode from lectures or tutorials and advocates that practical work in all its forms can be further enhanced by capitalising on the current opportunity to re-design practical assessment. The position paper is available here and looks at the values threats and opportunities of practical work in undergraduate science degrees. In addition it discusses how restructured practical work and assessment has the potential to provide a more secure, meaningful and comprehensive evaluation of student learning, adding even further value to an Australian university science degree.
