The Australian Council of Deans of Science (ACDS) made a submission to TEQSA’s consultation on proposed amendments to the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards), highlighting key priorities: Governance: Clearer expectations for academic oversight Racism and cultural safety: Stronger institutional responsibilities, including recognition of First Nations peoples and knowledge systems Disability and accessibility: Greater emphasis on universal design Emerging technologies: Balanced approaches that manage risk while enabling innovation (including AI) Review of the Standards: Regular cyclical review to maintain relevance and proportionality ACDS emphasises the importance of maintaining a principle-based framework with clearer expectations where practice varies. From the perspective of university science—spanning laboratories, fieldwork and work-integrated learning—the Standards must remain adaptable and outcomes-focused, supporting high-quality teaching, inclusive learning environments and a strong pipeline of skilled graduates underpinning national capability.Read the ACDS submission to TEQSA.
